Verse Explanation
A Nazirite had to avoid wine, strong drink, vinegar made from wine, grape juice, fresh grapes, and dried grapes. These restrictions reminded the person that their focus was to remain on God rather than personal pleasures. Abstaining from products connected with the vineyard symbolized complete dedication throughout the period of the vow. The sacrifice of ordinary comforts demonstrated the seriousness of the commitment made before God.
History
Wine was a common beverage in the ancient Near East, making this restriction a noticeable sign of dedication to God.
