Psalm 110

1 A psalm of David. The Lord says to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your control."
2 The Lord will make your royal authority spread out from Zion to other lands. You will rule over your enemies who are all around you.
3 Your troops will be willing to fight for you on the day of battle. You will be wrapped in holy majesty. Just as the dew falls fresh early in the morning, you will always be young and strong.
4 The Lord has taken an oath and made a promise. He will not change his mind. He has said, "You are a priest forever, just like Melchizedek."
5 The Lord is at your right hand. He will crush kings on the day when he is angry.
6 He will judge the nations. He will pile up dead bodies on the field of battle. He will crush the rulers of the whole earth.
7 He will drink from a brook along the way and receive new strength. And so he will win the battle.

Chapter Summary

Psalm 110 is a short but extremely important royal psalm about God's appointed ruler. This chapter is only seven verses long, but it contains some of the most important royal and messianic imagery in the Psalms. The chapter presents a ruler who receives authority directly from God, defeats his enemies, rules from Zion, and holds an unusual priestly position.

The opening verse is especially significant. The LORD tells the ruler to sit at His right hand until his enemies are placed under his authority. In the ancient world, the right hand represented honor, power, and privileged position. The image therefore describes someone who has been given extraordinary authority by God.

The ruler's authority is connected with Zion. Zion was the location associated with Jerusalem and became especially important after David established Jerusalem as the capital of his kingdom. The psalm therefore uses the royal center of Israel as the place from which God's appointed ruler exercises authority.

The third verse describes the ruler's people willingly gathering to support him. They are not portrayed as a reluctant crowd. They willingly join him and are described with imagery of holiness and freshness. The comparison to morning dew creates an image of something abundant, refreshing, and renewed.

The fourth verse introduces the most unusual feature of the psalm. The ruler is also a priest. He is described as a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. In ancient Israel, kings and priests normally had different roles. The king belonged to the royal line, while priests came from the priestly family of Aaron. Melchizedek provides an earlier example of someone who was both king and priest.

Melchizedek appears in the story of Abraham as the king of Salem and priest of God Most High. Psalm 110 uses his priestly order as a way of describing a ruler whose priestly authority is different from the ordinary Israelite priesthood. The phrase "forever" also gives the passage an unusual sense of permanence.

The final three verses return to the theme of victory. God's appointed ruler will not remain passive while evil continues. God stands beside him, and hostile kings and nations are brought under judgment. The language is that of ancient royal warfare, where victory over enemies demonstrated the strength and authority of the king.

The final verse is brief but memorable. The ruler drinks from a stream while continuing on his way, and then he lifts his head. The image can be understood as one of refreshment and renewed strength. Even after conflict, the ruler remains strong enough to continue toward victory.

For Jewish readers, Psalm 110 belongs to the tradition of royal psalms connected with God's covenant with the Davidic king and the hope for God's appointed ruler. For Christians, the psalm became especially important because the New Testament repeatedly applies its language to Jesus. Jesus' position at God's right hand and His priestly role are major themes in early Christian teaching.

The chapter therefore has a historical setting in ancient Israel's royal tradition, while also developing language that later generations understood in a broader messianic sense. The original Davidic context and the later Christian interpretation are important to distinguish while recognizing why the psalm became so significant.

Psalm 110 ultimately presents God's appointed ruler as powerful, victorious, authoritative, and priestly. His authority does not come from human politics alone. It comes from God. His enemies will eventually be defeated, His people will willingly follow Him, and His priestly role will endure. The psalm therefore expresses confidence that God's chosen ruler will ultimately overcome opposition and establish God's authority.
