Summary of Exodus 26
Exodus chapter 26 reveals more instruction God gives Moses on Mount Sinai concerning the tabernacle. The previous chapter spoke about the Ark of the Covenant, the table for the Bread, and the golden candlestick. Exodus 26 focuses on what will be built to surround the holy objects. God instructs Moses concerning the curtains, coverings, boards, sockets, bars, and veil that will separate the interior of the Tabernacle.
The tabernacle is to be constructed using ten curtains of fine twined linen, with blue, purple, and scarlet yarns, in which cherubim figures are wrought (v. 1). Each curtain is to be 28 cubits long and 4 cubits wide. The curtains are to be made in two groups of five.
The Lord instructs Moses on how to join the curtains together. The five curtains are to be joined to each other, and the other five are to be joined similarly. 50 loops are to be placed along the edges of the two sets of curtains, and 50 golden clasps are to unite them (v. 6). When joined, the two sets of curtains are to be a covering for the tabernacle.
A second covering is to be made using goat’s hair. This covering is even larger than the linen one. The eleven curtains are to be 30 cubits long and 4 cubits wide. They are also joined together in a similar pattern, with 5 curtains making the first group and 6 the second (v. 14). The sixth curtain is turned back at the front of the Tabernacle.
The two sets of joined curtains are to be attached together using loops and brass clasps (v. 17). The extra length is to be brought down over the edges of the tabernacle, and the extra half-curtain at the back is to hang the Tabernacle as well. Thus, this covering is to provide additional protection to the inner ones.
The tabernacle also requires additional coverings to protect it from the elements. God instructs Moses to prepare another covering made of ram skins dyed red. Then, he is to make a covering of another type of durable leather (v. 19).
After giving directions concerning the curtains, God proceeds to instruct Moses concerning the walls of the Tabernacle. The boards are to be made of acacia wood. Each board is to be 10 cubits in height and 1 ½ cubits in width. They are to have two tenons, or projections, fitting into the sockets (v. 16).
Twenty boards are to be placed on the south side of the tabernacle. Another twenty are to be placed on the north, 6 at the west, and 2 additional boards at the corners (v. 16). These boards are to form a wooden structure around the Tabernacle.
Each board is to be covered with gold, and the rings of gold are to be placed on the boards. On the boards, silver sockets are to be placed to hold the structure together securely and firmly.
God gives instructions concerning the bars. They are to be made of acacia wood and run along the sides of the tabernacle. Five bars are to be used on one side, five on the other, and five at the back (v. 30). The bars are to be covered with gold, and gold rings are to hold them in place.
One special bar is to be placed in the middle of the boards and to extend from one end to the other. The bars are to unite the separate boards, thus forming a strong structure for holding the curtains. When the structure is complete, it will hold the curtains and coverings of the Tabernacle.
God instructs Moses that all these objects are to be made according to the pattern shown to him on the mountain. The Tabernacle is not to be constructed like an ordinary tent; every item has its use and is to be made according to the pattern God showed to Moses.
The Lord describes the veil that is to separate the Holy Place from the most holy part of the tabernacle. It is also to be made of fine twined linen and have cherubim figures wrought into it by a skilled craftsman (v. 31). Four pillars of acacia wood covered in gold are to support this veil. Their hooks are to be of gold, and their four silver sockets are to support the veil. The veil is to be hung beneath the clasps that unite the inner curtains.
The veil is to serve as a divider, and the Ark of the Testimony is to be placed behind it. Above the Ark is the mercy seat. The table and the candlestick are to be placed in the Holy Place, which is in front of the veil.
God instructs Moses concerning the curtain that is to hang at the entrance to the tabernacle. It is to be made of blue, purple, and scarlet material and fine twined linen. This curtain is to be decorated with needlework and to hang from five pillars made of acacia wood. The pillars are to be covered with gold, and their hooks are also to be of gold. The five sockets beneath them are to be of brass.
Exodus 26 provides a glimpse of the planned tabernacle. The inner curtains are to form the main covering, and the goat’s hair and additional coverings are to provide extra protection. The boards provide a strong structure for the walls of the tabernacle, and the bars are to hold these walls firmly. The inner veil of blue linen and cherubim figures is to separate the Holy Place from the most holy part of the Tabernacle.
This chapter also serves as a reminder of the amount of work that will have to be done to prepare the materials for the tabernacle: fine linen, colored fabrics, goat’s hair, wood, gold, silver, and others. Skilled workers will be required to sew the curtains, to carve the cherubim figures, to make the boards, to cover them with gold, and to make the other objects.
Separations are also significant in the Tabernacle; while the Holy Place will contain the table and the candlestick, the Ark is to be hidden behind the veil in the most holy part of the Tabernacle. The entrance curtain marks the beginning of the place of worship. All of these details create a clear division between the world of the Israelites and the holy place God will dwell in.
Exodus 26 reveals the beginning, the middle, and the end of the instructions God gave Moses concerning the tabernacle. These instructions will enable the Israelites to prepare this structure as a place of worship for the Lord: the Ark, the table, and the candlestick will be brought there. As the Israelites journey from one place to another, the Tabernacle will accompany them. The detailed instructions provided in this chapter will prepare the Israelites for building this holy structure.
