Summary of Leviticus 18
Leviticus chapter 18 instructs the Israelites concerning sex, marriage, and other familial obligations. The Lord commands them to be holy as He is holy (19:2) because He has brought them out of Egypt, which is full of detestable practices (18:3). The Lord warns them to keep His judgments and statutes (18:2, 4-5) and not to walk in the statutes of the inhabitants of the land (18:3, 24-25).
Moreover, He warned them not to defile themselves (18:24-28) by engaging in abominations (18:26), such as incestuous relationships (18:6) or bestiality (18:23). Leviticus 18:20 warns against adultery (18:20) and polygamy (18:18). In addition, the Lord warned them against child sacrifice (18:21).
The Lord told them that when they entered the land, the land had already been defiled by the abominations of the inhabitants (18:24-25). Thus, the children of Israel should not act as the nations of Canaan because the land would cast them out (18:25). The Lord told them to remember (18:26) what He made the nations of Canaan suffer for their abominations (18:21). Therefore, the Israelites should not commit the same sins as the nations of Canaan because they would suffer the same fate (18:24-28).
