2 Samuel 20

1 An evil man who always stirred up trouble happened to be in Gilgal. His name was Sheba, the son of Bicri. Sheba was from the tribe of Benjamin. He blew his trumpet. Then he shouted, "We don't have any share in David's kingdom! Jesse's son is not our king! Men of Israel, every one of you go back home!" Reference People
2 So all of the men of Israel deserted David. They followed Sheba, the son of Bicri. But the men of Judah stayed with their king. They remained with him from the Jordan River all the way to Jerusalem. Reference

Summary of 2 Samuel 20

This chapter records another rebellion against David shortly after the defeat of Absalom. The chapter shows that restoring a kingdom after civil conflict requires more than military victory—it requires healing division and wise leadership.

Sheba son of Bichri, a Benjamite, takes advantage of the tension between Judah and Israel and calls the northern tribes to separate from David. Many Israelites follow him, creating another threat to David's rule.

David responds quickly by sending Amasa to gather Judah's army. However, Amasa delays, and David turns to Abishai and Joab to pursue Sheba. During the mission, Joab kills Amasa and once again takes command of David's army. This event reveals Joab's complicated character: he is highly effective as a military leader but often acts according to his own judgment rather than the king's instructions.

Sheba eventually hides in Abel Beth Maacah, where Joab surrounds the city. A wise woman from the city negotiates with Joab and convinces the people to surrender Sheba's head, ending the rebellion without destroying the city.

The chapter closes with David's government being reorganized. Joab resumes command of the army, and royal officials continue their duties.

The main lesson of the chapter is that division can continue long after a conflict appears finished. True restoration requires wisdom, humility, and reconciliation. God preserves David's kingdom, not only through warriors but also through wise individuals who bring peace.
