Psalm 87

1 A psalm of the Sons of Korah. A song. The Lord has built his city on the holy mountain.
2 He loves the city of Zion more than all of the other places where the people of Jacob live.
3 City of God, the Lord says glorious things about you. Selah
4 He says, "I will include Egypt and Babylon in a list of those who recognize me as king. I will also include Philistia and Tyre, along with Cush. I will say about them, 'They were born in Zion.' "
5 Certainly it will be said about Zion, "This nation and that nation were born in her. The Most High God himself will make her secure."
6 Here is what the Lord will write in his list of the nations. "Each of them was born in Zion." Selah
7 As they make music they will sing, "Zion, all of our blessings come from you."

Summary of Psalm 87

Psalm 87 is a short celebration of Zion that presents Jerusalem as the spiritual center of God's purposes and looks forward to a time when people from many nations will be counted as belonging to God.

The psalm begins by focusing on the foundation of God's holy city.

Jerusalem is not presented simply as a political capital.

It is described as a city established by God and associated with His holy mountain.

God loves Zion because of its special role in worship and in His relationship with His people.

The psalm then makes a remarkable statement about foreign nations.

Egypt, Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, and Ethiopia are specifically mentioned.

These nations were historically different from Israel, and several were traditional enemies or major foreign powers.

Yet the psalm says that they will be recognized as people who know God.

This creates a striking vision of inclusion.

People who come from outside Israel can become associated with Zion.

The language of being "born" in Zion emphasizes belonging.

The psalm imagines a future in which nationality does not prevent people from being recognized as part of God's community.

God Himself keeps the record.

He knows which people belong to Him.

The final verse returns to worship.

Singers and musicians celebrate the city, while the people recognize God as the source of their blessings.

The chapter therefore moves from Zion's foundation, to Zion's glory, to the inclusion of the nations, and finally to joyful worship.

Psalm 87 ultimately presents Zion as much more than a physical city, because Jerusalem becomes a symbol of God's presence and a spiritual home that reaches beyond the boundaries of Israel. The opening verses establish Zion as a city founded and loved by God. Its importance does not come simply from its political position or physical beauty. It is important because God has chosen it as a place associated with His worship and presence. The psalm therefore views Jerusalem from a theological perspective: the city represents God's relationship with His people and His purposes for the world.

The most remarkable part of the psalm is its treatment of foreign nations. Egypt, Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, and Ethiopia are named as peoples who will be recognized as knowing God. This is surprising because several of these nations were major rivals or enemies of Israel. Yet the psalm does not describe them only as outsiders. Instead, it presents a future in which they are acknowledged as belonging to God's community. The message is that God's purposes are larger than one ethnic group or one political nation.

The repeated idea that people from different nations can be considered as having been born in Zion uses the language of citizenship and belonging. A person's original nationality does not have to determine his or her final spiritual identity. The psalm imagines God Himself recognizing people from many nations as belonging to Zion. This is a powerful vision because it places God's ability to create a community above the boundaries that normally divide people. National origin, political history, and former hostility do not prevent God from bringing people into relationship with Him.

The fact that God Himself records the nations is also significant. Human beings may classify people according to nationality, language, geography, or political identity, but God's record is different. He determines who belongs to Him. The emphasis is therefore on divine recognition rather than human approval. The nations do not simply declare themselves members of God's community; God is the One who acknowledges them. This makes the inclusion of the nations a work of God's grace and purpose.

The final verse brings the vision back to worship. The people of Zion respond with singing and celebration. Their joy comes from God Himself, who is presented as the source of their spiritual blessings. This is important because the greatness of Zion is never intended to become an excuse for pride in the city itself. Zion is glorious because of God's presence and God's purposes. The focus ultimately returns to Him.

Psalm 87 therefore combines a strong love for Jerusalem with an unexpectedly broad vision of God's people. Zion remains central, but the boundaries of belonging become much wider than Israel alone. Foreign nations that once seemed distant or hostile are pictured as people who can know God and be recognized as belonging to Him. The chapter ultimately teaches that God's purposes cannot be limited by human divisions. The city of Zion becomes a symbol of God's welcoming purpose, where people from many nations can be counted among those who know Him. The final response to this vision is not fear or exclusion but joyful worship, because God's greatness is revealed through His ability to bring people from different nations into relationship with Himself.
